Our Mission

Speech Now.org believes current laws and Court decisions recognize a free speech zone, an area where citizens can assemble for an ideological purpose and have the freedom to speak to their fellow citizens about candidates.

We will use this free speech zone to give new life to the First Amendment by working to liberate speech for other groups.

Here is how we plan to do it.

Speech Now.org is an independent speech group of individuals dedicated to promoting and protecting our First Amendment rights to free speech and for the freedom to assemble.

A major purpose of our mission is to expressly advocate to other people to vote for federal candidates who support these First Amendment rights and to vote against candidates who oppose such rights.

We believe this is the best way to liberate speech from the grip of politicians who have successfully passed laws aimed at preserving their power by squelching criticism.   After all, politicians seem to respect the Second Amendment.  Now it's time they respect the First Amendment too.

Speech Now.org created a pure citizens group.  We have adopted rigorous restrictions on our activities to eliminate even the appearance of corruption of candidates.  Our charter also guarantees our independence from parties, candidates and special interest money.  Finally, these principles also ensure that donors give solely because they believe in what we do.

Speech Now.org:

  • only accepts contributions from individuals.
  • refuses even a cent from corporations, labor unions or foreigners.
  • never donates directly or indirectly to any candidate.
  • speaks independently of all candidates and political parties.
  • never coordinates its activities with any candidate or political party.
  • tells our donors that their donations may be used for political purposes, so they are aware of our mission to use elections to advance our cause of free speech.
  • never raises money by conducting business activities -- not even a bake sale.
  • never raises money through offering membership discounts for consumer purchases in return for a dues payment.
  • fully discloses all contributions and expenditures with just as much or more detail as any other substantially similar actor in federal elections.

Unfortunately, it is not clear the Federal Election Commission agrees whether this free speech zone exists.  Therefore, to prevent prosecution for exercising our free speech rights, we sought an advisory opinion from the FEC as to whether our plans are permissible under their interpretation of the law.  They did not answer our request because there were four vacancies on the six-member commission, and four votes are needed to decide our request.  Until we obtain permission from the government to speak, we will limit our solicitations and expenditures to under $1,000 per calendar year so as to protect against unfair enforcement actions.

To ensure our rights to speak, we have filed a lawsuit against the FEC in federal court.
